Oh No…. Sir Alex Won’t Retire!
Bad news for all the ABU’s out there as Sir Alex Ferguson dismisses any suggestion that he is going to retire, and even insisted that he is already planning ahead for next season. Sir Alex was overjoyed when Edwin van der Sar pulled off a great save from Nicolas Anelka to clinch United’s third European Cup but he revealed this only had the effect of leaving him wanting more. We think the only reason he won’t retire is that he’s still after Bob Paisley’s record of three wins which was achieved at arch rivals Liverpool!
The win against Chelsea on penalties in last Wednesday evenings Champions League final clinched a domestic and European double for United, who enjoyed the evening even more in the knowledge that none of the other ‘top 4’ teams managed to win a trophy this season.
Fergie reckons that his mind is far from thinking about retiring because, as he says, the euphoria almost immediately evaporates and you have to move on. He compares it to a drug that you just cannot get enough of.
In a warning shot to the rest of the league, and the other ‘big 4 teams’ in particular, Sir Alex reckons United will be even stronger this coming season and has even cheekily backed his team to successfully defend their European crown. Something Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will have something to say about, no doubt.
Ferguson thinks the trick is look into the player’s eyes at the beginning of pre-season training just to make sure the hunger still burns. With Sir Alex staring you right in the face though, we somehow doubt that hunger is what he will see in the players eyes- fear would be a much better description!
He is adamant though that his players are more than ready and willing to defend not only their Champions League crown but their Premier League one as well. He admits it will not be an easy task to defend the European Cup but is still bullish about their chances.
